Chapter 1: Introduction
Pain is something all of us experience at some point in our lives. There are days where we wake up and things are sore — our body hurts. These days are difficult, but for most of us they come and go.
However, for 8% of Americans, every day is filled with non-stop pain. This isn’t pain that hurts a little bit… it’s pain that hurts a lot and is constant throughout the day. It’s the type of pain that makes bending, standing, or walking up stairs difficult or impossible. It’s pain that makes going about life hard. For sufferers of chronic pain, there are few ways to get relief. Painkillers go some way to helping manage the pain but taking these for a long time can be damaging to your health.
Research shows that taking painkillers like ibuprofen for long periods can lead to hearing loss and other health problems. Taking strong painkillers like Oxycontin can lead to a spiral of addiction and illness.
When you’re in pain each day, the last thing you want is to take things that may cause more health problems in the future. As you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you know about this subject well. 26 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. If you’re one of them, you’ll know all about the battle between hurting each day and wanting relief.
If you do suffer from chronic pain, you’ve probably tried various painkillers and meds. You’re probably also keeping active and staying away from alcohol and unhealthy foods.
Despite all of this, you’re probably still in pain every day. When we’re in pain every day, we can start to feel depressed, discouraged, and full of despair. If you suffer from chronic pain, you are more likely to suffer from depression. While right now it may seem like there are few solutions to your problem, there may be one that helps you improve your pain and live a better life.
For many hundreds of years, people have looked to alternative forms of medicine to help provide treatment for illness, disease, and other conditions. Over time, treatments that don’t work have been forgotten and the ones that are effective havebeen kept.
One of the ways ancient societies treated pain was by using cannabis. Ancient Chinese societies used cannabis and hemp plants to treat pain and other conditions for hundreds of years. A recent study found that traditional Chinese books and texts talked extensively about cannabis and its uses in Chinese medicine.
Until recently, we didn’t know what part of cannabis made it so useful for treating pain and other conditions. In 1940, scientists Adams and Todd discovered the compound CBD. Since then, significant tests, studies, and research has gone in to CBD. These have all shown that CBD can help treat chronic pain.
This ebook will cover the topic of pain and how CBD can help to provide relief and treatment to those of you suffering from different conditions. It covers the history of CBD, how to use CBD for pain treatment, what types of CBD product are available, and where to find them.
As well as having this ebook as a guide, we also have a series of articles on our website to help you learn more about how CBD can help improve different health conditions and how it may be able to help you.
Chapter 2: What is CBD?
Reading how many times we’ve mentioned ‘cannabis’ so far might have got you a little concerned. No wonder: cannabis has a pretty terrible reputation. Our politicians and governments have spent decades telling us it ruins lives and destroys people’s health. In most of the United States and around the world, cannabis is illegal to consume and grow.
Because of this, the idea of taking something that comes from the cannabis plant can worry many people. Everyone knows that cannabis makes you “high” and changes the way you think and behave. We’ve all heard stories about what cannabis has done to people’s lives and how it’s ruined their jobs or families. Maybe you’ve even tried cannabis yourself and have experienced its effects. If you have, you probably know that a lot of the warnings out there aren’t quite based in reality.
Whatever your experience with cannabis, you would probably be worried about taking it every day — even if it could help relieve your pain.
Thankfully, CBD is not cannabis.
It comes from the cannabis plant but it isn’t the same compound that gives you a high. In fact, CBD isn’t psychoactive at all.
The compound that gives cannabis its famous properties is THC. THC is presen t in cannabis in high quantities and is what causes all of the psychoactive effects. THC and CBD are very different things. In fact, THC is a completely separate compound from CBD and both of them can be extracted from the cannabis plant separately.
This means that when scientists want CBD instead of THC, they use specific methods to extract just that CBD rather than THC. High-quality CBD products contain absolutely no THC at all. This means they have no psychoactive properties and are safe to consume every day.
What’s more, the CBD found in CBD products that you can use to treat your pain often doesn’t come from cannabis plants. Instead, it comes from industrial hemp. This means the source of the CBD used for these products has an even lower concentration of THC, so the amounts are very small to begin with.
What is Hemp?
Hemp is a type of the cannabis sativa plant that is different from the cannabis plant you’re probably thinking of. It looks very similar to cannabis but it has much lower levels of THC and much higher levels of CBD. It is one of the fastest growing plants in the world and was the very first plant to be made into fabric around 10,000 years ago.
Hemp is mostly grown for industrial purposes. It’s used in a whole range of products like: fabric, food products like health bars, building materials, types of plastic, paper, and animal food. Hemp is also used to make CBD products.
France is the world’s biggest producer of hemp. It makes up 70% of the world’s output of the plant. In the United States, imported hemp products (like the ones used to make CBD products) must contain 0% THC. This means that for hemp products to be able to be used in the US, they must contain none of the psychoactive substance found in cannabis.
Research found that the size of the hemp market in the US was $600 million a year in 2015. With such a large market of hemp products and laws that state that the products must not contain THC, you can rest assured that the CBD products you use are safe to consume.
What’s more, while the hemp products used to make CBD are very low in levels of THC, many societies have been using industrial hemp for its levels of CBD for centuries.
The History of CBD
There is evidence which suggests that hemp is the earliest plant that humans cultivated. This means that ancient societies planted and grew hemp to use. Ancient objects have been found that use hemp fibres in the way they were made. Ancient Chinese books and writings talk about using hemp and cannabis for medicine and health purposes.
But while many of these texts talk about using hemp and cannabis for treating conditions and illnesses, a lot of historic information about the use of hemp, cannabis, and CBD has been lost to history.
Instead, the firm history of CBD started not so long ago. Scientist Roger Adams and his colleagues discovered the full compound CBD in 1940. Before then, the chemical form of CBD wasn’t fully known and many scientists before him had tried to figure out what it was. For their research, Adams and his team used American hemp because it contains large amounts of CBD. More research was done by other scientists in 1963 to fully discover the scientific structure of CBD.
Since the full chemical structure of CBD was discovered, lots more scientific research has been done to understand how CBD affects the body.
Many scientists now believe that CBD has potentially powerful benefits and effects on a range of conditions. Around the world, CBD is being legalized for use and this has led to more and more research being done on the compound. Clinical trials have been run and serious studies have been conducted that show the benefits you can receive by taking CBD. We’ll cover these more in another chapter.
The science is young and there still isn’t a firm understanding of how CBD works inside the body or why it has the effects that it does. Despite this, research into CBD shows that it is safe to take regularly and can offer a wide range of benefits.
Because of this, CBD has started to be used in modern medicine. Doctors and scientists now regularly recommend CBD to patients. There have even been high profile cases where people have campaigned to make CBD available in their area or country.
Even though the science is young, CBD is being used more and more often as a form of treatment. As more and more people use CBD and as more and more studies are done into CBD, we’ll start to understand more about this unique compound.
CBD in Modern Medicine
If you’ve heard anything about CBD, you probably know that it has a whole host of potential uses. Right now, the CBD craze is sweeping the nation and the world and many people are promising that CBD can treat almost any illness.
The truth isn’t quite as glamorous as many people make it out to be — but it’s not far off. Modern medicine is making use of CBD in a variety of ways. This is because of the many benefits CBD has that can affect a variety of conditions. We’ll break down the benefits of CBD in more detail in the next
section, but CBD is used in modern medicine for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest benefits of CBD is that it is can help to reduce inflammation. Studies have shown that when animals or humans take CBD products, the amount of inflammation they experience in their body decreases. This can have significant effects on conditions like arthritis, chronic pain, swelling and bruising, and more.
CBD has also been shown to help make people feel more relaxed. Studies have shown that taking CBD regularly can help to make people feel calmer.
These calming effects can also help people feel less anxious and stressed. Because of this, many doctors are now recommending CBD products to patients who suffer from anxiety and stress-related onditions.
Because of CBD’s calming effects, it is also now being used to help people sleep. CBD can help promote a relaxed feeling that helps stop people’s minds from racing and distracting them when it comes time for sleep. As well as these benefits, CBD is also used to treat a variety of other conditions like: Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons, Cancer, PTSD, Chronic Inflammation, Depression, Acne, and Drug Dependency.
While all of these conditions are quite different, CBD has been shown to provide significant benefits to people suffering from them. These benefits aren’t just shown anecdotally, by people taking CBD, they are actually backed up by scientific research.
One of the biggest use cases for CBD in modern medicine is for pain treatment. 8% of the American population suffers from chronic pain and many of these people are turning to alternative forms of medicine for relief. CBD is proving to be one of the most popular forms of chronic pain treatment. This is because of the wide number of benefits CBD use has and the way it affects a variety of conditions.
Chapter 3: Using CBD to Treat Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is a difficult and horrible condition that affects the body. It can be caused by other health conditions but doctors treat it as its own condition as well. Many people who have health conditions such as arthritis, cancer, or multiple sclerosis suffer from chronic pain.
With such a large number of the population suffering from chronic pain — right now it’s believed 8% of Americans suffer from the condition — there’s a good chance you or someone you know suffers from it. If you do, you’ll know just how difficult this condition can make every day life. So many people with chronic pain find small tasks excruciating. Things like walking up stairs or bending to pick something up can cause intense feelings of pain that last for hours.
Common treatments for chronic pain are usually centered around painkillers. Doctors regularly prescribe strong opiate painkillers to help combat chronic pain. While these meds can be very effective at treating the pain itself, they can cause health problems on their own.
Many doctors prescribe Oxycodone to help treat chronic pain. Oxycodone is known for its highly addictive properties. Taking it can lead to dependency and other complicated symptoms and conditions.
If your doctor hasn’t prescribed opiates to treat your pain, you’re probably taking other drugs like diazepam (valium), acetaminophen, or steroids. These are less severe than opiate-based painkillers but also carry health risks. Diazepam has been found to slow down brain function and brain activity and interfere with the way your brain processes things. Because of this, it can be very dangerous for people to take diazepam and do simple things like drive a car.
Whatever your current method of treatment, there’s a good chance you’re unhappy with how it’s treating your chronic pain or how your treatment might affect your health in the future. If this is the case, CBD may provide a treatment that’s positive in the way it helps your chronic pain and in the way it affects your health in the long term.
More and more people have started to use CBD to treat their chronic pain conditions. In 2005, an NBC poll showed that 12 million of the 38 million chronic pain sufferers had tried using cannabis or CBD to treat their pain. Since 2014, sales of CBD products have grown from $108 million a year to $512 million a year and rising.
Much of this growth is because CBD has been shown to reduce the symptoms of pain and also reduce the damage done by chronic pain itself.
The Effect of CBD on Chronic Pain
CBD has been shown to have a direct effect on chronic pain. In 2008, scientists worked to review studies done between 1980 and 2007 to discover how effective CBD is at helping sufferers of chronic pain.
These scientists found that CBD was “effective in overall pain management.” What’s better, the scientists found that taking CBD for chronic pain did not lead to any adverse effects. This means that unlike diazepam, oxycodone, or other painkillers used to treat chronic pain, CBD does not lead to health damage later on.
In 2016, a group of scientists studied how CBD affected chronic pain caused by arthritis in laboratory rats. They found that applying CBD to the areas of swelling in the rats caused the levels of inflammation and pain to reduce. The effect was so strong that the scientists concluded that “CBD is a good candidate for developing improved therapies” for chronic pain treatment.
A 2008 review of studies into CBD and its effects concluded that CBD may have “significant” side benefits as well as treating chronic pain. These include acting as an anti-sickness medication.
For many people who suffer from pain-induced sickness, this is likely welcome news. But while these studies all show that CBD is effective at treating chronic pain, one thing remains: how does CBD treat chronic pain?
The answer to that question is still a small mystery. Many scientists have theories about the way CBD works to affect chronic pain but more research needs to be done to discover exactly how it works.
Initial work shows that CBD works by affecting pain receptors. When you take CBD, it affects the way your body registers pain. It does this by interfering with pain receptors inside our body and by blocking or reducing the amount of pain they register. When this happens, you feel less pain.
It’s important to note that CBD may not actually stop the cause of pain. Instead, it may only reduce or stop the pain from being felt. In this way it is similar to other painkillers which only work to prevent your body from registering the pain caused by a condition. In addition, even though CBD may make you feel less pain, it may not be treating the cause of the pain you once felt.
The Science of CBD
Research shows that humans and many other animals have what is called a endocannabinoid system. This is a system that consists of cannabinoid receptors which are located throughout the body. This system helps to regulate lots of bodily functions like sleep, pain, and the immune system.
CBD works by interacting with this system to block different molecules. When it does this, it prevents your body from feeling pain or reduces the amount of pain you feel.
How to Use CBD to Treat Chronic Pain
Now that you know more about how CBD affects chronic pain, you are probably wondering how you can use CBD to treat your chronic pain. In most cases, you have three options: using CBD cream, CBD oil, or CBD softgels. Each of these CBD products that contain high levels of CBD, have benefits that can be used to treat your chronic pain. Which one you choose to use depends on what type of chronic pain you suffer from and what type of effect you would like to have.
CBD cream is made when a highly concentrated form of CBD is made into a cream that is able to be absorbed through the skin. CBD creams usually come in pump-activated bottles for easy use. These creams are very good at targeting localised pain. This can be pain caused by arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other health conditions that affect certain areas of the body. CBD cream is applied directly to the area you’re looking to treat.
It absorbs right into the skin and can help to reduce swelling and pain caused by that area. Many people find that CBD cream works well on their hands, back, and joints to reduce pain and inflammation. Because of the way CBD cream can be applied to targeted areas, it’s great for treating chronic pain caused by localized conditions. If you have arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or another condition that causes you pain in a certain area but not throughout your body, CBD cream is probably the solution for you.
As well as having CBD in cream form, CBD also comes in an oil. CBD oil is taken by dropping on the tongue and allowing it to absorb. Because it’s applied and absorbed through the tongue, CBD oil is able to provide pain relief to the whole body, rather than a targeted area. Because of this, CBD oil is great if you suffer from all over chronic pain, rather than localized pain.
CBD is usually created by mixing CBD with a base oil like coconut oil. High quality CBD oils will typically only include these ingredients and a handful more. High quality CBD oils will also have high levels of CBD. Look for bottles of oil that contain over 500mg of CBD.
Another variety of CBD oil is CBD softgel products. CBD softgel products contain hemp oil which is suspended in a nanoemulsion inside a softgel. These products are taken orally and the CBD is absorbed inside the body.
CBD softgels contain hemp oil particles > 4x smaller than normal CBD oil products. This means that CBD softgels allow your body to absorb CBD at a much faster and higher rate than normal.
The benefit of this is that it increases the speed the CBD starts to work inside your body and increases the amount of CBD your body absorbs. Both of these factors mean that CBD softgels provide better and stronger CBD benefits.
Treating Chronic Pain With CBD
Once you’ve decided on which CBD product you are going to use — either CBD oil, CBD cream, or CBD softgels — it’s time to start using the product to treat your chronic pain. When using any new medication or product that can have an affect on your current treatment, it’s important you speak to a doctor or health practitioner first. Make sure to do this before you start using a CBD product.
If you’re using a CBD cream, apply the cream twice a day to the area that causes you pain. Wait until the cream has been fully absorbed before putting on clothes, covering the area, or washing the area. If you’re using CBD oil, apply the amount of oil stated on your CBD oil product to your tongue using a dropper. Wait until it has fully absorbed before swallowing. Because of their unique design, CBD softgels are easy and convenient to take. The daily dosage is 1-2 softgel which is taken orally. We recommend starting with 1 gel per day and increasing to 2 gels per day if needed.
Remember, before using your CBD product for the first time, check the instructions on the packaging as they may be different from the advice we’ve just given. What’s more, speak to your doctor or health advisor about whether you should be taking CBD. It’s always best to get professional advice before taking new supplements.
Chapter 4: Types of CBD Products
Now you know how to use CBD, you’re probably wondering which CBD products you should use. Unfortunately, even though the CBD market is growing rapidly, finding a high quality source of CBD oil, CBD cream, or CBD softgels can be tough. There are many businesses out there that have low quality CBD products or that regularly mislabel the amount of CBD their product includes.
When you’re looking to treat your chronic pain condition as best you can, you need to only look for the highest quality source of CBD. If you start taking a lower quality CBD product, you won’t experience the pain-reducing effect at the same level.
At Quality Nutrition, we’re focussed on providing some of the highest quality CBD products on the market. To help make your search for high quality CBD oil, CBD cream, or CBD softgels easier, we’ve created three CBD products that are among the best in class.
Quality Nutrition CBD Oil
Quality Nutrition CBD Oil is a high quality CBD oil that contains 750mg of CBD per bottle. This is a market-leading amount of CBD and is head and shoulders above the competition. We make our CBD products using organic, US-grown industrial hemp. Because of this, our CBD products have exceptionally high levels of CBD and 0% THC.
Our CBD oils are made by infusing fractionated coconut oil with CBD. Our oils are available in a variety of flavours, so they’re easy to take and swallow. Each 1ml serving of Quality Nutrition CBD Oil contains 25mg of CBD. This is significantly higher than other CBD oils on the market.
Quality Nutrition CBD Oil is available in three flavors: Original, Mint, and Cinnamon
Quality Nutrition CBD Cream
Quality Nutrition CBD Cream contains one of the highest concentrations of CBD on the market. Like our CBD oil, our CBD cream is made from organic and American- grown industrial hemp.
Our CBD cream is made with Lipoderm® which helps it absorb into your skin faster and better. Each bottle of our CBD cream contains 750mg of CBD which is an exceptionally high level and one which could be strong enough to help you treat your condition.
Quality Nutrition CBD Softgels
Quality Nutrition CBD Softgels are pharmaceutical grade CBD products that deliver exceptional results. Our CBD softgels contain hemp oil particles > 4x smaller than particles found in CBD oil or CBD cream. This means they absorb faster and in greater quantities than traditional CBD products.
Our CBD softgels are made with distilled hemp oil from organic farms here in the USA. We blend our hemp oil with active curcumin to help enhance the anti-inflammatory effects of our CBD softgels.
Each CBD softgel contains 25mg of CBD which is absorbed faster and better than with other CBD products. Using CBD Softgels can help increase the benefits you receive from taking CBD and help those benefits start to have an effect even faster than normal.
Chapter 5: Conclusion
By now, you should have much more of an understanding about how CBD can help treat your chronic pain. You’ll understand how CBD works inside the body to help reduce inflammation and prevent pain receptors from registering pain and you’ll know how it may help you treat your chronic pain without the side effects many traditional drugs can have.
If you’re considering using CBD to help treat your chronic pain you are making a wise decision. Scientific research shows that CBD can have significant benefits when it comes to pain reduction. CBD can also have benefits to other conditions you might have that could be causing your chronic pain. If you suffer from arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or if you have cancer, you may find that CBD helps improve those conditions, too. What’s more, CBD may also help reduce feelings of sickness caused by your chronic pain.
Because this is a new topic, the information we have about how CBD works and how it can treat chronic pain is growing every day. As time goes on, more work will be done to work out exactly what CBD does inside the body and how to use it even more effectively to treat conditions. Right now, the work done by scientists and researchers around the world shows just how powerful CBD can be.
If you’re looking for more information about CBD, Quality Nutrition regularly publishes blog posts and research that talks about how to use CBD for different conditions and covers new information on CBD as a whole.
If you’re now looking for a high quality CBD product to help reduce your chronic pain symptoms, look no further than Quality Nutrition CBD Oil, CBD Cream, and CBD Softgel products. Each contains some of the highest levels of CBD on the market and may help you reduce your symptoms of chronic pain.
